Foster Service Dogs in Training
At Freedom Service Dogs, we unleash the potential of shelter dogs by transforming them into custom-trained, life-changing assistance dogs for people in need. Our clients include children, veterans and active duty military, and other adults. Their disabilities include autism, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Help our dogs in training succeed by providing them a loving foster home during weekends and holidays.
Freedom Service Dogs always needs families to foster our dogs on weekends, holidays, or extended periods from one to several weeks. We also occasionally need puppy raisers who raise and train a puppy for several months until the dog is one year old. Foster homes provide the dogs with a break from the kennel setting relieving kennel stress and making them more ready to learn during the week. Fosters also provide basic training regarding house manners. In return, you will learn some of our training methods, get lots of love from the foster dog, and help a rescue dog on its path to a new life.
A typical weekend foster will pick up the dog between 3:00pm and 6:00pm on Friday and return the dog Monday morning between 7:00 am and 10:00am. Alternative arrangments can be made. You determine when and how often you foster, but we request a minimum of 6 weekends per year. We provide all supplies including food, crate, treats, toys, and blankets.
Requirements: Willingness to learn our training cues and methods and follow them consistently. (1) Attend Volunteer Orientation; (2) Attend Dog Care Class and Foster Class; (3) Complete Foster Survey and Release at Foster Class; and (4) Foster Home Inspection. You can foster if you have your own pets. You do not need to have a backyard to foster.
To get started, please register for Volunteer Orientation on the volunteer page of our website. https://freedomservicedogs.org/volunteer/new-regular-volunteers-fosters/
