Reading for Peace
The Conflict Center is seeking volunteers to read to students in Metro area schools on Thursday afternoons throughout the school year. Volunteers read books related to peacemaking, relationship building, problem-solving and violence prevention to small groups of, usually 2-3, students. Students are asked to discuss the concepts in the books with volunteers in order to create a positive, interactive time to promote learning. Each reading session is 30 minutes long and volunteers typically visit 3-4 classes per Thursday afternoon. The Conflict Center provides an extensive collection of children's literature for volunteers to choose from. Volunteers are required to complete a brief training session and complete a background check. Bilingual Spanish-speaking volunteers are always needed.
