Volunteer Naturalist

Location: Colorado Springs and Woodland Park

At Catamount Institute, we offer environmental education programs to schools, scouts, and other groups interested to develop ecological stewards and enable students to learn the value of our ecosystems.  Our Programs use the lens of local places to build deeper connections to classroom content through project-based learning and hands-on exploration which provide relevant learning experiences for students and an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their communities.  Volunteer Naturalist help guide students through lessons where they learn STEM principles in an outdoor setting. Training is provided.


  • Co-teach or individually facilitate lessons to increase awareness and discovery of the environment; share your enthusiasm for the natural world
  • Attend curriculum training programs
  • Serve as a mentor and coach to all students
  • Help organize students, teachers, and parent chaperones into assigned groups; assist with group management on trails and in field groups
  • Prepare field equipment (such as field guides and binoculars); ensure return and storage at the end of class
  • Remind groups of leave no trace ethics and guidelines
  • Ensure a safe and positive experience for COS students, parent chaperones, teachers, visitors, and other volunteers
  • Record volunteer hours, observations, questions, suggestions, and concerns after each program



  • Desire and enthusiasm for sharing nature with children
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Completion of volunteer environmental educator, orientation, interview training
  • Ability to commit to volunteer time during the school day (various times, Monday-Friday, 8am-3pm)Willingness and preparedness to work in all types of weather with varying temperatures, as well as indoors
  • Ability to hike and explore up to 2-3 mile, off trail, over uneven meadow and forest, for 2-3 hours
  • Experience working with children ages 5-12 (preferred but not required)
  • Appreciation for the natural world and spending time outdoors
  • Must pass a background check with the Catamount Institute and local school districts
